Fab Journal - 2006 Volume 44(1)

the mature moggie

Mogwi blossomed when he found himself ‘top’ cat in the family. He had a total change in personality and now loves being fussed.

Two years ago, Mogwi faced a new challenge - his first ever stay in a cattery. He and Happi had always been cared for at home by relatives and neighbours when Carolyn was on holiday. After Happi′s demise, Carolyn visited FAB listed Catz Cattery in Solihull and decided to book Mogwi in for a stay. Despite his advancing years, Mogwi loved this new experience and has returned several time since. Carolyn says ‘He has a fabulous time looking out at the rare breed chickens.’

AT THE GRAND OLD AGE OF 25, Mogwi can look back on an eventful life. Always referred to by his family as 'he' Mogwi is a tortie and, therefore, unsurprisingly, female! However, he appears un-phased by his gender confusion.

Together with a white cat called Happi, Mogwi's early days were spent in a rescue centre in Birmingham before Carolyn Coverdale and her family took them home at the beginning of 1981. Happi was an extrovert and hunter. Mogwi was an introvert with a bad temper and both cats were polydactyl (had extra toes). In later life, Happi suffered from skin cancer and was then, sadly, killed by a fox..

Understandably, Mogwi now spends most of his time at home, eating and sleeping. He has had an excellent appetite and likes his home comforts - two wheat bags are heated in the microwave twice a day, winter and summer. He remains, says Carolyn, 'a very important member of our family, which also includes seven dogs.'

Of Rose and Robery Cookes and their staff at Catz Cattery Carolyn says: 'They are just the most wonderful people and no amount of care is too much trouble.

We wish Mogwi many more happy years..
